5 Staple Foods

Bread,  Milk,  Cheese,  Salt and Sugar

Do you know these 5 common everyday day foods can create toxicity that leads to illness and disease? Do also know the same five foods can provide valuable nutrients for good health and well-being?

Its all a matter of choice. The more processed and refined the food is the more toxicity they can cause.

Here are some simply tips to help you make better choices.

Before the industrial age, breads were created from fresh, whole, stone-ground grains. This preserved the nutrient rich germ – the delicate oil portion – and the outer coating, called the bran.

When I make bread at home it has 3 ingredients – Organic Wholegrain Flour, Water, Rock Salt. I make sourdough using a starter made from flour and water.

Bread made in this way is not suitable for mass-production, due to the ease of spoilage of these fresh, fragile nutrients and the time required producing such high quality loaves.

As a result, all mass-produced bread today is created from grains that are milled at very high temperatures (400°F), and separated from the germ and bran. This high temperature processing also destroys many of the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals.

What I buy:

  • Stone-ground whole wheat sourdough bread
  • Breads made from sprouted grains, seeds, nuts, and herbs
  • Whole grain bread made in small batches from a local bakery

What I don’t buy:

  • White flour breads are all made from highly refined flour
  • Breads made with preservatives and additives
  • Most packaged bread found in a typical grocery store shelf
  • Breads found in takeaway and convince stores

When milk is pasteurized all valuable enzymes are destroyed. Lactase for the assimilation of lactose; Galactase for the assimilation of galactose; Phosphatase for the assimilation of calcium.

Literally dozens of other precious enzymes are destroyed in the pasteurization process. Without them, milk is very difficult to digest. Our pancreas get put under stress and isn’t always able to produce these enzymes. This can lead to diabetes and other diseases.

Another process used in manufacturing dairy milk is homogenization. This destroys the delicate balance of natural fats contained in dairy. It also oxidizes some of the cholesterol which should be avoided.

What I buy:

  • Cold Pressed Raw Cows Milk
  • Plant based milks like Rice, Coconut and Organic Soy Milk
  • Make my own Almond Milk using a cold pressed juicer

What I don’t buy:

  • Avoid all lite, skim and fat free milk
  • Pasteurized and homogenized milks
  • Long life UHT dairy milks

Oxygen, Water, Salt and Potassium are essential for life.

Natural, unrefined sea salt is a vital element in the diet of not only humans but of animals, and even of many plants.

The use of sea salt is one of the most effective and most widely used of all food seasonings and natural preservatives. Sea salt contains about 80 mineral elements that the body needs. Some of these elements are needed in trace amounts and are essential to our health.

Good health depends on a good balance of two oceans of water inside the body. One ocean is held outside of the cells, and one ocean is held inside the cells of the body. Keeping the balance of these oceans is achieved by unrefined sea salt.

Refined salt (table salt), the most commonly available salt, on the other hand only gives you a craving for more salt. What you are eating is not satisfying your needs, it has been stripped of all the essential nutrients. Table salt also contains various toxic additives such as aluminum silicate to keep it powdery and porous. Aluminum is a very toxic element in our nervous system.

Refined salt burdens your kidneys and adrenal glands and interferes with the absorption of nutrients and depletes calcium stores.

What I buy:

  • Celtic Sea Salt (grey colour with a moist texture)
  • Himalayan crystal or rock salt (pink colour)
  • Ra-See Salt (dendritic sea salt)

What I don’t buy:

  • ALL table salt
  • Many sea salts are also refined
  • Iodized Salt
  • Cooking Salt

Refined white sugar is what most people use. It is lethal when ingested by humans because it provides only that which nutritionists describe as “empty” or “naked” calories. It lacks the natural minerals which are present in the sugar beet or cane sugar. In addition, refined sugar is worse than nothing because it drains and leaches the body of precious vitamins and minerals through the demand its digestion, detoxification and elimination makes upon one’s entire system.

Refined sugars have been observed to aggravate asthma, move mood swings, provoke personality changes, muster mental illness, nourish nervous disorders, deliver diabetes, hurry heart disease, grow gallstones, hasten hypertension, and aid arthritis.

Artificial sweeteners are by far the most dangerous substance on the market that is added to foods. They accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported.

What I buy:

  • Raw honey is my #1 choice
  • Raw cane sugar or Rapadura Sugar
  • Organic Maple Syrup

What I don’t buy:

  • Refined white sugar (sucrose)
  • ALL artificial sweeteners
  • Corn syrup, Fructose, Dextrose, Maltodextrin

To turn raw milk into natural cheese, it is first cultured, like buttermilk or yogurt, with bacteria. It is then curdled or broken into curds, which
are solids, and whey, which are liquids. This is done by the use of a culturing agent such as the enzyme rennin, or rennet.

When I make my own feta cheese I use lemon juice as the culturing agent.

Look out for genetically engineered rennet derived from plants that have been injected with cow genes. Companies are not legally required to disclose the source of the rennet, so unless the product specifically states a non-animal source for rennet, you won’t know.

The whey is drained from the curds, which, depending on the type of cheese being made, may be pressed to remove more moisture. This fresh cheese may then be sold as is, aged or ripened to further dry it and develop its flavor.

Cheese happens to be especially addictive because of an ingredient called casein, a protein found in all milk products. During digestion, casein releases opiates called casomorphins that really play with the dopamine receptors and trigger that addictive element.

What I buy:

  • Organic white cheeses like feta, ricotta, cottage
  • Organic non-animal rennet cheeses
  • Make my own in a fermentation machine

What I don’t buy:

  • Yellow cheese made with animal rennet
  • Low fat cream cheese
  • Highly processed cheese (read the label)
